A failed back-up light reduces visibility and makes it harder for other people to tell that the car is reversing. This guide covers replacement of the removable incandescent back-up bulbs on a North American 2016 Honda Civic four-door sedan. It applies to the original rear combination lamps on gasoline 1.5L turbo and 2.0L sedan models. It does not cover the coupe, hatchback, later model years, non-U.S./Canadian lamp assemblies, LED conversions or altered aftermarket housings.

There is no dedicated OBD-II trouble code for a burned-out back-up bulb. Diagnose the lamp itself, the socket and the circuit before ordering. One dark side with the other side working usually points toward a bulb or socket problem. If both lights are out, first consider the fuse, wiring, connectors and transmission range signal rather than assuming both bulbs failed together.

Safety first: Park on level ground, select Park, set the parking brake and switch the ignition and exterior lights off. Let the lamp area cool. Keep the key away from the car so another person cannot energize the lights while your hands are near the sockets. Protect the paint, support the lamp assembly and never let it hang from its wiring. For the final operational check, keep everyone out of the vehicle’s path; use a helper in the driver’s seat with the service brake applied and the parking brake set.

Featured replacement: SYLVANIA 921 Basic ten-pack

The exact featured item is SYLVANIA 921 Basic miniature bulb, manufacturer model/part number 921.TP, Amazon ASIN B000J2JEJW. The selected variation contains 10 clear incandescent 921 bulbs. The Civic uses two back-up bulbs, so this package supplies both replacements plus eight spares. It does not include sockets, lamp housings, seals, fasteners, tools or gloves.

Honda specifies a 12-volt, 16-watt T16-style bulb for this lamp, and the 921 is the applicable 16-watt miniature-bulb size. Confirm the package still says 921 and compare the wedge base, glass envelope and rating with the removed bulb before installation. Do not substitute an LED conversion, a 6-watt H6W coupe bulb or another similar-looking wedge lamp.

The Amazon page displayed the rounded indicator “100+ bought in past month” when retrieved on October 22, 2026 from a cached page crawled the prior week. That is an Amazon purchase indicator for this ASIN and period, not audited sales data or a current inventory claim.

The Honda sedan owner’s manual independently specifies a 16-watt back-up bulb and illustrates removal of the complete rear lamp assembly. A genuine Honda parts catalog also identifies 34901-TK8-A01 as a 12V 16W reverse-light bulb used in the 2016 Civic. A vehicle-specific 2016 Civic catalog separately lists SYLVANIA 921 Basic as a back-up-light bulb. Together these checks support the 921 application without relying on the Amazon title alone.

Symptoms and diagnosis before replacement

  • One lamp is dark: inspect that bulb’s filament, wedge contacts and socket for heat damage or corrosion. Swap only when safe and useful for diagnosis.
  • Both lamps are dark: confirm the transmission is actually selecting Reverse and inspect the appropriate fuse, wiring and range-position input. Two new bulbs will not repair a missing circuit signal.
  • The lamp works when moved: a loose, oxidized or heat-damaged socket may be the real fault. Do not force a bulb into a deformed holder.
  • Water or condensation is present: inspect the housing, seal and body opening. Replacing a bulb will not correct a leak.
  • The lens is broken or the assembly is loose: repair the physical damage before road use; a bulb alone is incomplete.

A visual filament check is useful but not conclusive. If a known-good bulb does not illuminate, stop replacing parts and test the socket voltage and ground using an appropriate wiring diagram. Melted plastic, repeated bulb failure or damaged insulation warrants professional diagnosis.

No lifting equipment, scan tool, torque wrench, fluid or programmed relearn is required for an unmodified bulb replacement. Honda does not publish a tightening torque for these lamp bolts in the owner’s procedure. Reinstall them with the correctly fitting hand tool only until the lamp is secure; do not invent a torque value or overtighten plastic-mounted hardware.

How to replace the back-up bulbs

  1. Confirm the application. Verify that the car is a 2016 four-door sedan with the original removable incandescent rear bulbs. Compare the new 921 package with the rating and shape of the installed bulb.
  2. Secure and power down the car. Park level, select Park, apply the parking brake, turn the ignition and exterior lights off, remove the key from the work area and allow the lamp to cool.
  3. Protect the work area. Open the trunk. Clean loose grit from the lamp edge and place a clean cloth where the assembly could contact paint. Optional low-tack tape may be placed on clean adjacent paint.
  4. Remove the lamp bolts. At the rear edge of the lamp, use a correctly fitting Phillips screwdriver or socket to remove the exposed bolts identified in Honda’s manual. Keep them together; no replacement fasteners are included with the bulbs.
  5. Withdraw the lamp assembly. Grip the assembly with both hands and pull it straight rearward from the rear pillar. Do not lever against the painted body, twist the lens or allow the lamp to hang by its harness.
  6. Identify the back-up socket. Use the lamp layout and the white back-up-lens position to distinguish it from the brake and amber turn-signal bulbs. The sedan manual lists the back-up bulb as 16 watts.
  7. Remove the socket. Rotate the correct socket counter-clockwise and pull it straight out. Inspect the seal, contacts and plastic for moisture, corrosion, discoloration or melting.
  8. Replace the bulb. Pull the old wedge bulb straight from the socket. With clean gloves or a lint-free towel, insert one new 921 bulb fully. Do not touch the glass with bare fingers; if contact occurs, clean it with an appropriate lint-free method before use.
  9. Repeat on the other side. Replacing the pair provides matched age and output. Store the eight remaining bulbs dry in their package; do not leave loose glass bulbs in the trunk.
  10. Reinstall each socket and lamp. Insert the socket and turn clockwise until it seats. Align the lamp pins with the body grommets, slide the assembly onto its guide, then press it straight forward until fully seated. Refit the bolts gently with the hand tool.

Final inspection and functional checks

Check that both lamp assemblies sit flush, do not rock and have even gaps. Make sure the trunk closes without contacting the lamp and that no tool or loose bulb remains near the hinges. Look through the clear sections for fingerprints, cracks or trapped moisture.

For the operating test, choose an open area. A helper should sit in the driver’s seat, hold the service brake, keep the parking brake set and select Reverse only long enough to check both white lamps. No one should stand directly behind the car. Return the selector to Park and switch the ignition off immediately afterward. If one new bulb does not light, stop and recheck the correct socket, bulb seating and connector rather than repeatedly cycling the transmission.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Do not use the coupe’s H6W/6W specification on the sedan or extend this guide to a hatchback.
  • Do not pry between the lamp and painted body. The assembly withdraws rearward after its bolts are removed.
  • Do not confuse the brake, turn-signal and back-up sockets. Identify the white back-up position before removing anything.
  • Do not touch new bulb glass with bare fingers or install a bulb with a damaged wedge base.
  • Do not overtighten the lamp bolts. The owner’s procedure supplies no torque specification.
  • Do not call the repair finished if the socket is melted, the housing leaks or both lamps remain dark.

Frequently asked questions

How many bulbs does the sedan use? Two—one back-up bulb in each rear combination lamp. The featured ten-pack leaves eight spares.

Will a 921 LED replacement work? This guide validates the original-style 12V/16W incandescent application only. An LED conversion can introduce polarity, heat-management, beam-pattern or fit issues and is not covered.

Do I need to disconnect the battery? Honda’s owner procedure does not require battery disconnection for this bulb. Keep the ignition and exterior lights off and prevent accidental activation. Unnecessary disconnection can erase settings.

Why replace both sides if only one failed? Both bulbs usually have similar age and use. Pair replacement is practical, but it does not excuse diagnosis when both lamps are out together or a socket is damaged.

Is there a reset or relearn? No scan-tool reset or programming step is part of replacing these conventional bulbs.
