How to Replace the Right Fuel Pump on a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox FWD — 2.4L Gasoline

Right fuel-pump module replacement may be considered when a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox FWD with the 2.4L gasoline engine develops extended cranking, stalling, weak acceleration or a no-start condition. Codes such as P0627, P0628, P0629 and P069E require fuel-control diagnosis, while an inaccurate gauge also needs sender and wiring checks. Symptoms and codes alone do not establish that the in-tank pump has failed.

This guide covers the right/main electric module. The tank has a separate left auxiliary assembly connected by a crossover tube. The factory replacement route removes the tank and opens both module locations to release that connection. The engine also has a separate high-pressure direct-injection pump; this article concerns the electric supply module in the tank.

DIY skill level
Advanced: safe fuel recovery, vehicle lifting, exhaust removal and supported tank handling.
Estimated repair time
4–6 hours after diagnosis and preparation; corrosion or damaged fittings adds time.
Estimated parts budget
$170–$290 for the module, two seals and small supplies; equipment extra.

Time and DIY prices are planning estimates for sound original hardware, not factory labor allowances or live product offers.

Plan the fuel and lifting work first

Reduce the tank below one-quarter full before removal. Use approved fuel-recovery equipment and compatible storage. The optional OTC 1758 handler requires the tank to be drained completely before use, following its grounded-container instructions. Work in a ventilated area with a cold exhaust, suitable spill control, splash protection and no flames, smoking, heaters or sparking equipment nearby. The tank must have an independent, stable support; vehicle lifting equipment and a tank handler serve different purposes.

The pressure-release route below requires an operating engine and suitable GM-capable diagnostic equipment. If the engine cannot complete it, the level is uncertain, or pressure cannot be verified, have a properly equipped workshop prepare the fuel system. Before dismantling, have the battery/exhaust reassembly specifications, both ring-locking references, a matching CH-48482 hand driver and any required exhaust seals/hardware. Stop for fuel leaks, damaged tank locking features, unsafe lift clearance or seized hardware.

Featured product: exact pump and package

The featured item is A-Premium Electric Fuel Pump Module Assembly with Pressure Sensor, APFP0331PC, ASIN B07JKRGV8C. The exact listing supplies one boxed right-side assembly and identifies the pump, sending unit, strainer and seal ring. It does not establish that both tank-opening seals or either metal retaining ring are supplied.

The A-Premium catalog uses the related number APFP0331 and lists a float, pressure sensor and sealing ring, while separately marking “Gasket Included” as no. Check the delivered package and original connections. The listed interchanges include 13506688, 13577832, 20818970, 20818974, E3840M, FG1295, M100037, SP6633M and P76866M; confirm the vehicle and original part identification before ordering.

PZEV means Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle. A broad 2010–2017 title does not include every engine, fuel type or emissions configuration. Compare the emissions label, VIN-based catalog, original module and connectors; this guide does not extend the FWD procedure to AWD vehicles.

Diagnose before dropping the tank

Read the system that set the fault. The 2011 factory no-start diagnostic checks battery condition, cranking speed, fuel supply, ignition, immobilizer operation and relevant trouble codes. The fuel-pump control module can store its own fault and request the engine computer to illuminate the warning light. P069E therefore calls for the underlying module codes, not automatic pump replacement. Save freeze-frame data before clearing anything.

Distinguish low-pressure delivery from direct injection. Check supply restrictions, power, grounds and connectors before condemning the tank module. Use the correct GM pressure-test equipment and conditions; hearing the pump run does not prove delivery under load. The engine’s high-pressure pump, rail and injectors require their own diagnosis. Do not loosen a direct-injection line to check for fuel or use a tank-service pressure-release step as permission to open that circuit.

Identify the noise and the sender involved. GM bulletin PIP5122E attributes a particular popping noise after cold start or an EVAP purge event to movement of the left auxiliary module. Replacing this right/main pump will not correct that specific condition. An inaccurate gauge can likewise result from a float, wiring or crossover issue rather than a failed electric pump.

Tools, parts and supplies

Match each tool to the actual connection and available clearance. The two tank openings use different ring tools and seals. Workshop equipment must have compatible capacities, adapters and working heights; a tank-handler attachment alone is not a complete lifting setup.

DIY versus professional cost

Expense Planning estimate
Right pump module $120–$190 allowance; check the selected offer.
Two opening seals $30–$60 allowance; a correct supplied right seal can reduce the separate purchase.
Small supplies $20–$40 allowance. Exhaust hardware or metal rings add cost when needed.
DIY parts total $170–$290 before tax, shipping and equipment.
Tools not owned $250–$650 illustrative allowance for several hand/diagnostic items; GM diagnostic setup, hoist, tank support and recovery are separately quoted.
Professional model-year benchmark $1,681–$1,936: labor $439–$644 and parts $1,242–$1,292.

RepairPal’s 2011 Equinox estimate excludes taxes, fees, location and related work. It is a general model-year benchmark, not an exact quote for this FWD vehicle or featured aftermarket pump. Diagnosis, fuel contamination, seized exhaust hardware and wiring repairs can change the budget.

Replacement sequence: 2011 Equinox FWD 2.4L

The factory tank procedure and main-module procedure govern this application. Keep photos of hose routing and module orientation. Have both new module seals and the correct reassembly specifications available before starting.

  1. Prepare fuel level and release supply pressure.

Begin with fuel below one-quarter; arrange qualified fuel recovery first if necessary. With the system still connected, use a capable scan tool to command the fuel-pump relay OFF, then start and idle the engine until it stalls, normally about 20–30 seconds. Turn ignition OFF and verify little or no pressure with the scan tool as directed; repeat the run-to-stall step if pressure remains. At line disconnections, position a gasoline-approved catch container with an opening at least 300 mm (12 inches) across. If this sequence cannot be completed or verified, stop for the appropriate workshop method. Factory pressure-release instructions.

  2. Isolate the battery and raise the vehicle safely.

Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable through the correct vehicle access procedure. Raise and support the vehicle at the designated lifting points, following the equipment instructions. Provide clearance for the supported tank to be lowered and removed. A hydraulic jack by itself is not safe vehicle support.

  3. Remove exhaust access and release the tank connections.

With the exhaust cold and independently supported, remove the exhaust section required by the factory tank procedure. Disconnect the canister vent-valve wiring and filter vent hose, tank vent pipe and chassis fuel-supply connection. Release the filler, EVAP and fresh-air hoses, the tank electrical connector and its frame retainer. Clean each fitting before release, label routing and cap exposed connections. Never pull on wires or use the tank’s weight to separate a line.

  4. Support the tank before releasing its straps.

After pressure verification, complete any fuel recovery required by the selected handler. The OTC 1758 specifically requires a drained tank. Position the compatible handler, distribute the load and secure it. OTC setup instructions. Remove the strap nuts while the handler carries the load. Lower slowly, watching all sides for attached hoses, harnesses or snags. Move the tank to a stable work position. This FWD procedure does not call for lowering the rear frame.

  5. Open the secondary side for the crossover connection.

Clean around both closed openings. Disconnect the secondary electrical connector and EVAP line. Turn its ring counterclockwise with CH-48482, then raise the assembly partway. Squeeze the crossover’s plastic retaining tabs, then gently separate the coupling. Remove the secondary assembly and old left O-ring while protecting the float. Keep dirt out of the tank. Secondary-module procedure.

  6. Remove the right/main assembly.

Record its orientation. Disconnect the primary electrical, fuel and EVAP connections as directed. Use J-45722 to turn the primary ring counterclockwise, controlling the spring-loaded module as it releases. Lift it out while guiding the crossover tube and float through the opening. Drain retained fuel into suitable recovery equipment and discard the old right opening seal.

  7. Inspect and install the replacement with two new seals.

Compare module connections, float movement and tube routing with the original. Inspect both sealing lands and all ring/tank locking features. Fit the correct new right O-ring, lower the primary assembly without trapping its float or crossover, and install its ring clockwise with J-45722. Reconnect the primary electrical, fuel and EVAP connections. Partially lower the secondary assembly and slide the crossover into its retained position. Install the secondary with its own new left seal and turn its ring clockwise with CH-48482. Reconnect its electrical connector and EVAP line. Restore the original orientation and routing. Verify both flanges sit evenly and the rings are fully installed; do not apply a torque from a different pump.

  8. Raise the tank and restore its connections.

Use the handler to guide the tank into place without pinching wiring or tubes. Install its straps and tighten the strap nuts to 20 N·m (15 lb-ft). Reconnect the supply, vent, EVAP and fresh-air lines, electrical connector and frame retainer. Refit the filler hose and tighten its clamp to 5 N·m (44 in-lb). Check each connection’s latch and retention before removing tank support.

  9. Restore the exhaust, refill and reconnect power.

Reinstall the exhaust with any required new seals/hardware and the correct fastener torques, keeping joints aligned and the system clear of the tank and hoses. Lower the vehicle safely. Add enough clean gasoline to cover the pickup before running the new pump, refit the fuel cap and clear all spills. Reconnect the negative cable using its specified fastener torque.

  10. Prime, check for leaks and verify the repair.

With every fuel connection closed, complete three ON 5-second / OFF 10-second cycles total. Inspect the fuel-system connections for leakage. Start the engine only after the leak check is satisfactory; do not operate the starter continuously beyond 20 seconds. Verify smooth operation and reasonable gauge behavior. Save any returning codes, complete the relevant diagnostic checks and road-test only after the stationary checks pass.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Replacing the tank pump solely because P069E is present, without reading the pump-control module’s own faults.
  • Ordering a PZEV, flex-fuel or different connector variant from a broad model-year title.
  • Opening both tank locations but replacing only one seal, or mixing the right and left seals/tools.
  • Bending a float arm, leaving the crossover loose, or trapping a hose while raising the tank.
  • Running a new pump before refilling, or overlooking fuel and exhaust leaks after reassembly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace it through the rear seat?

The verified 2011 FWD factory route removes the fuel tank. Do not cut an access opening through the floor; the tank, wiring and vapor lines are below it.

Does the included seal finish the parts list?

No. This procedure opens the left side to release the crossover as well as the right/main opening. Both require a new correctly matched seal; exhaust materials and damaged retaining hardware are separate checks.

Will a basic OBD-II reader handle the pressure-release command?

No. A basic reader can help save engine codes, but this factory route requires equipment that can command the relevant GM fuel-pump relay and verify the result.

Will this module fix the cold-start tank pop?

The specific condition described in PIP5122E involves the left auxiliary assembly. Diagnose the noise first; the featured right electric module is a different component.
